## Docs keys that surprise people

Docs runs in your browser, so a few keys differ from desktop word processors. Redo is Ctrl+Shift+Z, while Ctrl+Y repeats your last action. Headings are Ctrl+Alt+1 to 6 (Cmd+Option on a Mac), and Ctrl+/ shows Google's own shortcut list inside the document.

Some navigation keys are sequences: hold Ctrl+Alt (Ctrl+Cmd on a Mac), press N, then H, to jump to the next heading. Menu keys depend on the browser: in Chrome on Windows Alt+F opens the File menu, while other browsers use Alt+Shift+F.

## Printing and saving

Print gives you a two-column sheet without the rest of the site; pick Save as PDF in the print dialog to keep a copy. Filter first to print only what you need, or download the sheet as a Markdown table for your notes.

## Questions

**How do I paste without formatting in Google Docs?**

Press Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows and Linux or Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac. The text takes the style around the cursor instead of keeping the fonts and colours it was copied with.

**How do I switch to suggesting mode with the keyboard?**

Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+X (Cmd+Option+Shift+X on a Mac) to suggest edits, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Z to go back to editing and Ctrl+Alt+Shift+C to view only. Suggesting needs edit or comment access to the document.

**How do I count words in Google Docs?**

Press Ctrl+Shift+C (Cmd+Shift+C on a Mac). The dialog shows pages, words and characters, for the selection if you have one, and can keep a word count on screen while you type.
